Twenty-one.

The sun is here

Yep, that's right, the sun is here and that can only mean one thing. It's revision time! So I've been spending the majority of my time in the library, rather than spending precious time in the British sunshine (we all know it won't last long). Checked the weather forecast today, what a mistake! Turns out is is due to rain about an hour after I finish my exam on Tuesday. Bloody typical. This gives me little motivation to stay in the libes and revise, knowing I'm probably missing the only sun of the summer! However, I have been managing around 4 hours per day stuck in that hell-hole!

Yesterday, we went to watch the Olympic Torch Relay in Coopers Field in the city centre! Was such a nice evening, and a free event! Sat on the grass, in the sun with a cider and music! Was a perfect little revision break and had got me so excited for London 2012!

Fingers crossed the sun decides to stay!

Twenty.

Wembley

Firstly, what a week of football! Absolutely gutted than United were beaten to the top by their biggest rivals, City, due to 2 last minute goals. Not going to dwell on that day too much, gutted really doesn't come close. But it was a nail biting end to the season, and QPR need huge credit for that game, especially with their charming captain getting a red! The Champions League Final last night saw Chelsea crowned the kings of Europe after a thrilling game and tense penalty shoot out! Great to see an English team win, and if they don't keep Di Matteo, something aint right!

Yesterday I was lucky enough to go to Wembley for the Championship Play-off Finals. It was West Ham v Blackpool, and as most of my family are massive Pool fans, I donned my orange wig and was in full support of the Sea Siders! Plus I'm a huge fan of Ian Holloway, that man needs to be back in the Prem, what a legend! But sadly after an exciting game, West Ham managed to snatch a last minute goal to see them back in the Premiership (Match report to come)! As a football fan getting to see a game at Wembley really is an amazing experience, loved every minute of it!

Pretty gutted that it's now the end of the season, all I can say is bring on the EUROS then the Olympics (which I have tickets for, woop woop)!

Eighteen.

Varsity 

The biggest sporting event at Cardiff University has got to be Varsity. No contest. Throughout the day sports teams ranging from football to badminton to rowing all compete against rival university Swansea in order to be crowned champions! The day of events comes to a close with a rugby match (of course, it's Wales after all) at the Millennium Stadium. This is my 3rd Varsity and previous years have both been amazing. A full day of drinking, socialising and watching sports events, combined with a whole host of hilarious banter, makes for one amazing and memorable day!

Even if you're not a huge rugby fan, the game is not to be missed! Purely for the atmosphere and friendly-come-offensive chants between the two sets of supporters! You might even be surprised and get into the spirit of the game itself!


Finally, after 2 years of watching Cardiff lose, we won in style! My last Varsity saw Cardiff smash Swansea 33-13! Here's a bit of info on the game: http://www.cardiff.ac.uk/news/articles/varsity-triumph-for-cardiff-8736.html

Seventeen.

This and that

I've now been back in Cardiff for 6 days and it feels as if I'd never left. I've not actually done much with my time, but the Easter hols now seem so long ago! I have found myself a new addiction, ebay! How I have never used this site before is beyond me. I've only got one item up for sale atm, starting slow and all that jazz, but I've just won my first auction! A fit pair of Topshop shorts for only £8.20 including P&P! Bargain mate. However, I am selling a black Topshop playsuit and it's only had a couple of bids of £1.50 so far, so it better sell for more as this is my new making money scheme! 

Not much has really gone down this week, back to work tomorrow at the Union for the first time in ages! Also going out tonight, even though I'm still recovering from a house party on Wednesday, so not looking forward to a day of serving alcohol on a hangover. But what can you do? Next week should hopefully prove to be more exciting, with Varsity on Wednesday, possibly one of my favourite days on the uni calendar!

Sixteen.

The final term

After a relatively uneventful and boring Easter break I'm back in Cardiff for my final term ever of university! This is possibly the most depressing thing ever, yet I don't seem to have actually registered that it will all be over in less than 2 months! 

This Monday was Matthew's 21st birthday and me and 11 other friends all went down to Nottingham to surprise him! Was such a good night and he was literally stunned when we all turned up at his flat! I sadly paid for this amazing night with a 2 day hangover, and I've literally just about recovered! After a few hours in the libes yesterday I managed to get my final assignment done, and decided to go out to Glam and celebrate (any reason)! However, this has meant today has been a complete write-off and I've not done any work or leaved the confines of my bedroom! What can you do, eh?


Off to the cinema now with the house mates to see Gone! Fingers crossed it's a good'un!

Fifteen.

Today is the day

That's right, today is the day I sent off my first application for a ski season job! Got a feeling there will be a lot more too! This one is with a small company called YSE ski and they run chalets in Val d'Isere. So my main job would be cleaning, making the beds, setting the table, serving food etc. But thankfully there won't be any cooking, as my culinary skills are pretty much non-existent and may actually kill someone. So, exciting and scary times! It is all starting to feel real now, can't actually believe or imagine that I'll be living in another country for 5 months! Mental. 

Went out for a nice meal with the Homedawgs last night, to this place called the Old Hall in Sandbatch. Was really nice, however the place is supposed to be haunted by numerous ghosts and Birdsey was sure there was one in the toilet when he went, lol. Also went paintballing with the fam today and it is safe to say I am a massive wuss! There is no chance in hell I could go to war as I was literally terrified of running into the open in case I got hit! Sadly did get hit a few times, and boy does it hurt! But actual respect to everyone in the army, there is no way I could do what they do. I was scared of getting hit by paint, they deal with real bullets. Respect. 

Must dash, my new addiction is calling (Words with Friends - basically Scrabble for Facebook).

Holidays

Despite going skiing for a week, this is officially the fist week of the Easter holidays! And so far I've been bored out of my mind! Only two of my friends are back from uni and they always seeming to be working! And I'm not insured on my car anymore, so getting anywhere is a nightmare! However, I came down to Cardiff for a few days on Wednesday night, to see the boyf and pick up assignments and work that I'd missed from the last week of term! I had great intentions of going to the library to get some work done, but ended up having lunch with my house mate that lasted about 3 hours! Also planning on going into town today with her, as it's a really nice day and Bank Holiday's are not meant to be spent in the libes. Fact.

Skiing

Literally just got back home after an amazing week of skiing in Val Thorens with the Mother and Brother! Weather was perfect, clear blue skies everyday and it was really warm! No need for ski jackets! However, on the first day we stupidly forgot to wear sun cream and came of the slopes with rather red faces! Mine didn't seem too bad compared to Adam's, whose face was pretty similar to a lobster. However, the next morning I woke up with a very red, sore and swollen face (actually looked like I had some dodgy botox!) So went to the doctors and I had 2nd degree burns. Woops. So I spent the rest of the week applying 3 different types of creams throughout the day, wearing factor 50 if I went into the sun and I had to wear a balaclava on the slopes. Joy.  Apart from the stupidly painful burns, the rest of the holiday was really good! Totally ready for my ski season now!

Twelve.

Fruit Ninja

If I'm being totally honest, I think I'm addicted to Fruit Ninja. It is officially the best game ever. I highly recommend that you play it. However, you may become obsessed, like myself, and that's not a great position to be in at the age of 21. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how much fun you can have repeatedly slicing fruit over and over and over again. It's great.

Moving away from Fruit Ninja, this week is officially my last in Cardiff before the Easter hols :( I'm going skiing with Adam and Mum next week, SO FRICKING EXCITED, so I'm missing out on the last week of term! Actually gutted that I'm not going to be here, as after Easter it's going to be work work work till the end of the semester! But hey, ho! I do get a free skiing holiday out of it! We're going to the same place that I went to just before Christmas with uni. Such a great resort, but will be weird going with family, as I've already been there with friends. Think it could be a very different holiday. I also booked everything for this holiday myself; flights, accommodation, transfers, insurance etc! So fingers crossed that everything thing goes according to plan!

Re my last post: Wales won the Grand Slam! Was such an amazing atmosphere in Cardiff and being in town was wicked, the streets were literally packed with stupidly happy and drunk Welsh people! England managed to pull of a good performance against a pretty shoddy looking Ireland team and we won 30-9! So very happy with that result.

Not really got much planned for the rest of the week, got a uni assignment due in next Monday, but as I'm going away it means I need to finish it by Friday! So really need to get cracking with that! Also got my final essay questions for Cult Crit last week, so I'm currently doing some reading in prep for that!

Eleven.

Fantastic

This week is essay week. Well, I only actually have one essay due in tomorrow, but it is 3000 words, so a lot of time has been spent in the libes! Just about finished it, so back at home now, sat on my bed with the plan to read it through and do some changes! (Well that's the plan anyway).


Dad and Adam came down at the weekend and we went to the Millennium Stadium to watch the Wales v Italy game! Nothing beats being in Cardiff on match day! The atmosphere is always amazing and to make things better the weather on Saturday was beautiful, it actually felt like summer! The game wasn't the best, but Wales still won, so was great to be at the stadium for that! This Saturday is the final of the 6 Nations, and Wales are the only team in contention for the Grand Slam! Now, I'm torn between what I want to happen... Yes I want Wales to win the Grand Slam because being in Cardiff for it will be amazing! However, if Wales lose and England beat Ireland, we could also be in contention to win the title. I know there are a lot of ifs there, but it could happen! Or maybe I'm being too optimistic?! Only time will tell! 


Anyway, I better get cracking with this proof-reading as the United game kicks off at 6pm and it's going to be a tough one! So if we lose I may not be in a fit state to concentrate on the essay!

Ten.

Reading week

Let's be honest: not much reading has been done. I still don't understand why we actually need a reading week, I'm only in uni 10 hours a week and I have Friday's off - so why is there any need to have a whole week off? Those thinking of paying £9000 a year for an Arts degree, just don't. Unless they triple your contact hours. I'm here to learn and be taught, that's what I'm paying for, is that too much to ask? Well, in a word, yes. Arts courses seem to be here merely to subsidise science ones. Science degrees have more contact hours and God knows how many resources - be it chemicals, labs, cadavers. What do we get, a few tatty books in the library that are always on loan and a few lectures a week. And all for the same tuition fees. Fair? I think not.

This reading week has been quite productive! Started planning for my Horror essay and had a JOMEC away day yesterday! The away day was actually really good - some useful (and some not so useful) lectures on what to do after uni* plus an amazing free lunch, tea, coffee and a pint! We also got to spend our lunch break in the sun on the beach, perfecto! The away day was then followed by a course social, and boy am I feeling the effects now! Hello hangover central!

The brother and father are coming down on Saturday as we've got tickets to the Wales v Italy game in the 6 Nations! So looking forward to that! You really can't beat the atmosphere in the Millennium Stadium at a Wales game! Anyway, I should probably do something about this hangover and get cracking with this essay!

Nine.

Time flies

I could have sworn that I'd already written a post for this week, but it turns out I had actually written it exactly a week ago! I haven't even done anything that interesting since my last post, yet it seems like I only wrote it a few days ago! This whole time gets faster as you get older business is actually quite true! And scary. Next week is reading week, meaning I'm now half way through my last semester EVER! That makes me want to cry a little. Today myself and Bekah have started to organise an end of year trip to the Beach Break festival! Seeing as it's most peoples final year at uni, we though it would be a good idea to get the whole uni gang together before we all go our separate ways sob :( But then the though of actually being at Beach Break is depressing because uni will then officially be over! It really doesn't feel that long ago since we were in freshers. Time for a cliché, but time really does fly when you're having fun (cringe). I spend way too much time thinking/ being depressed about leaving uni haha - I don't want to grow up! I definitely don't feel old enough to have start thinking about a career! It is quite worrying though, as recently me and  my friends only seem to talk about marriage, children and careers! Now that is a scary thought!

Eight.

Can't think of a title

So, last week I told you about Cardiff Jailbreak, this week I'm hear to say that we aren't doing it any more :( It happens to be 2 of our friends 21st birthdays that weekend and they are having a joint party, so can't really miss it! 

In other news, I've been doing more research for planning my gap year! Even though we can't actually apply for any ski season jobs yet (most applications open in April) it's always good to get background research done so we are organised when it come to applying! From what I've read I think I'd ideally want to work in a hotel cleaning or in a bar! Both will be pretty hard work, but it will also allow lots of slop time, which is a massive plus! I've also been checking out round the world flights and have found some amazing options! I actually can't believe how cheap the flights are too, especially as normal return flights to Australia or America alone are usually £500 +! And the round the world flights I've been looking at are around £800-1000, massive bargain! This route looks like my fave so far:

I really want to explore 'Asia' as the whole culture and way of life will be completely different to England, and there are some beautiful parts to visit! Jailbirds

A few days ago a friend asked if I wanted to join a team and take part in this years Jailbreak. Essentially, this is a charity event where teams of between 3-5 people have to get as far away from Cardiff Students Union as possible in 48 hours without paying any money for transport! Sounds pretty impossible, but you'd be surprised how far people have managed to get with a bit of persuasion, planning and determination! Previous winners have got as far as New York, Australia and Lanzarote! Pretty impressive. I'm not quite sure how far we will manage to get and hopefully we won't just be stuck in Dover begging for a ferry crossing! So with our team name Jailbirds sorted, we now need to raise a minimum of £50 each (we've set our own personal target of £100 each) and send out a heap of begging letters to see where we can end up!

Other than that, went to a restaurant in Cardiff Bay last night for Valentines, had such a nice meal but was absolutely stuffed by the end (quite surprised I managed 3 courses as I have the smallest appetite ever)! Out tonight with some of the girl to Oceana, literally not been there in ages, so quite excited! Not looking forward to my 9am leccy with a presentation though! Anyway, must dash, I need to pop to town to pay some moolah into the bank to fund my night out!

Six.

Midweek boredom

It's 2.30pm on a Wednesday afternoon and I'm sat in bed not knowing what to do with myself. I've been up since 8am (shock horror) and have been in uni 9-11. Had a really enjoyable seminar today, it was practical based and we got a chance to write our own introductions to different stories. Felt like I was back in school though, as after we'd written our examples we had to swap with our neighbour to compare.. cringe! Then had a cheeky McDonalds for lunch and rented a movie to watch later! I've been sat in bed now for a while trying to find the film Anita and Me, as I need to watch it for my lecture tomorrow. However, this task is proving to be impossible and I'm slowly losing the will to live. Plus I think I'm going to get some kind of virus from these websites!

Not much going on this week really, back into the swing of lectures, felt like they'd never gone! Also went out to Tiger Tiger (my favourite club in the whole world) on Monday for a friend's 21st, and had a really good night, the best in a while! And to top things off I wasn't that hungover yesterday, bonus! Next Friday is the dreaded results day... definitely not looking forward to that, especially as the mother is down and she won't be impressed if I've not done well! Anyway, not much else to say really, pretty uneventful week! Better get back to finding this film, don't want to be a massive failure!

Back to reality

Lectures started again this week, and I'm actually quite glad! It's nice to be back in a routine and to be honest I was getting bored of doing nothing all day! However, after trekking too and from uni for the past couple of days, I'm now starting to resent leaving the safety of my warm room. I'm not even joking, the temperature over the past couple of days has literally plummeted! I actually got brain freeze walking back from a lecture this afternoon!

Last Sunday I did my day of work experience for Britain's Got Talent! The majority of my time was spent  organising the audience and directing participants to the correct place. It was a long day of work, all outside in the freezing Cardiff rain, but I really enjoyed it and it gave me a great insight into the production of a large TV show. Had a few surreal moments, one where I was going to lunch in the backstage area and bumped into Alesha Dixon in the foyer. And another was waiting for Simon Cowell to arrive (who was over 2 hours late for his own show - but hey, if you've got the power...) and helping to manage the crowd  while they were eagerly waiting. 


My 9am start this morning has left me in dire need of a nap (I am NOT a morning person). And to make matters worse, I have another 9am leccy tomorrow! Oh it is a hard life. I actually worry about how I'm going to cope in the real world haha, 9-5 will definitely be a struggle!

Freedom


For the first time in my university career I actually managed to get all of my essays finished not one, but two days before they were due in. I've changed. And now I am free as a bird for two weeks! Oh the joys of not having to go to the library every day. However, I'm pretty sure boredom will set in after a day or two.


I've managed to secure myself some work experience as a runner for Britain's Got Talent during the Cardiff auditions! Excited doesn't even come close! However, I'm still totally confused about what I actually want to do after I graduate, career-wise. I really don't feel old enough to have a job, an actual proper grown-up job. I'm still 17 in my head. But the scary thing is, I've actually got to start thinking about these things now, and I don't think it's going to be as simple as the little plan I've mentally formed (and have convinced myself will easily happen), which is: go to London, get flat in London, get job in London. Sorted. Or not as the case may be. I initially wanted to work in TV, cos that sounds cool, right? I'd start as a runner and work my way up... but then I though, work my way up to what?! I am now coming round to the idea that I would quite like to work in the magazine world, as I actually really enjoy writing. I kinda need to make my mind up pretty soonish though, but in the mean-time I've got a ski season and travelling to plan. The grown up stuff can wait till next year.

Two.

Honey, I'm home!


I've now been back in Cardiff for a grand total of 4 days, yet it feels like I never left! I have four essays due at the start of next week, so the majority of my time is being spent in the library. Never before have I done this. I usually sit around in my room and slowly do my essays while having a major Facebook/ Twitter stalk by means of procrastination. While the libes is actually a great place to get work done, it doesn't half suck the life and soul out of you! Bring on a week today, when all my essay woes will end and my fate will be set. (Fingers crossed for a 2:1, eh?)


So, this week is all about work, work, work and NO going out. While this does wonders to my bank balance, it is a very upsetting prospect. However, in an attempt to keep madness at bay, myself and my house mates have come up with a fun packed itinerary, that includes no (well, minimal) drinking, to keep us entertained in the evenings. Yesterday we went on a wild trip to the bowling alley, I won both games, with my clear natural talent and ability. Obviously. However, this was made slightly easier by the fact that Charlie remained on 0 points up until her 6th go! Tonight we are going for a social drink at the pub. It's going to be a respectable affair I guarantee. Board games may make an appearance.
